Enhance your lawn’s health and appearance

Proper mowing height is one of the most important things to be considered when maintaining a lush green lawn. Grasses in our climate like to be mowed at a height of 3" during the spring and fall. The lawn becomes stressed if the grass is mowed at a lower height. During the warmer temperatures of summer, it is all right to let your lawn grow a little longer to store more energy for the drier weather. Never remove more than one third of the leaf in any one mowing. This may mean more mowing in peak growing seasons and less in dry, hot conditions. Never rake up the clippings. These should be left to decompose and add vital nutrients to the soil.

In order not to damage the grass, the blades of the mower must always be kept sharp. A dull blade tears at the plant whereas a sharp blade will properly cut the grass. A blade should be sharpened at least once a month. If a blade is not cared for, it can become permanently damaged.

The way a lawn is watered can be the deciding factor in successful root development. Over-watering and frequent watering can cause more damage than under-watering. Lawns need only 1 to 1.5 inches of water a week to thrive. Over-watering causes shallow root development which can lead to a damaged lawn in drought conditions. By watering deeply once or twice a week, the roots are forced to go deep into the soil to find moisture. Watering a little bit every day will keep the soil moist only at the surface and this is where the root system will stay.

Lawns like a balanced feeding a few times a year. Fertilizer applications can be done four times a year, in spring, summer, early fall and after the first frost. If your lawn is used to drought conditions in the summer, try to avoid a summer application. Feeding in the fall helps your lawn recuperate after a hot summer.

Always take good care of your lawn throughout the season. Try to dig out any weeds that appear and always repair dead or bare spots in your lawn. Lawns should be aerated once a year to avoid compaction and should also be de-thatched to loosen up the decaying material lying at the crowns of grass plants.

By following these steps, you will be able to keep your lawn healthy and free of disease.
