Scarecrow title

Kingsbrae Garden's first sCAREcrows Fight Hunger Contest was a great success, with 36 sCAREcrows submitted by families, businesses and non-profit groups. Judging was difficult, with so many ingenious participants, but the Charlotte County Volunteer Centre & Food Bank was the clear winner, as beneficiary of the whole venture. We hope to have even more entries next year, and hear that some people are already planning, to make the second annual contest even better than the first.

And the Winners Are...

Winners of Scarecrow Contest 2007

Pictured above are the winners of the 2007 Kingsbrae Garden Scarecrow Contest. They are grouped around the first-place winner, the Mercrow. The Bartlett clan, who constructed the scarecrow, won $1,000 for the food bank of their choice, plus a prize package for themselves (details at the bottom of this page). The second-place winner was Passamaquoddy Lodge, for Witch King of Passamaquoddy, with $500 for a food bank. Tied for third place: Jack Archer (Jack Pine Archery Club) and Operation Sports Coach (Youth Activity Centre). Each group received the full personal prize package, with $250 going to the food bank.

The Charlotte County Volunteer Centre and Food Bank was the recipient of the all of the cash prizes, totalling $1,750.

The People's Choice Award went to the Tin Man, created by a team of our own Kingsbrae gardeners.

At the award ceremony, it was announced that due to the great success of the contest and the interest expressed by many in participating, there would be a contest in season 2008 as well. So put on your thinking caps, get creative, and be ready for the call for submisisions next spring!

Sports Coach

Kingsbrae Garden’s sCAREcrows Fight Hunger contest was launched in support of the region’s food banks. Each entrant paid a registration fee of $25 or 25 lbs of food to the food bank of the entrant’s choice.

MerCrow

Much ingenuity and care has gone in to creating these scarecrows. For instance, a larger-than-life Mercrow—a sinuous blue mermaid caught up in a fishnet with little fishes… the Wizard of Oz Tin Man and Scarecrow… Operation Sports Coach (a conglomeration of sports equipment, put together by the youth at the Community Youth Activities Centre/CYAC. Great job, kids!)… a ‘traditional St Andrews lady’ courtesy of the Anglican Church Women… a Safe Driver (Charlotte Dial-a-Ride)... the Fundy Region Transition House family… a Child on a Swing, with Dragonfiles, from the Dragonfly Centre for Autism… the Ultimate Tourist (staff of the St Andrews Welcome Centre)… Salvador Dali from the Beaverbrook Art Gallery… and the list goes on!

Ring Wraith

Scarecrows were judged on Labour Day, with winners for first, second and third places, plus a “People’s Choice” award. Kingsbrae Garden visitors voted for their favourite scarecrow throughout July and August.

Tin Man and Scarecrow

Thanks to our generous sponsors, we have great personal prize packages as well as monetary prizes for the entrant’s preferred food bank. The Charlotte County Volunteer Centre and Food Bank (or the Food Bank of winner’s choice) receives, from Kingsbrae Garden, on behalf of the 1st prize winner: $1,000, for the 2nd prize winner:  $500 and 3rd prize winner:  $250. This will help to stock the shelves of the Food Bank just before school starts, when need is generally great. Tax receipts go to the contest winners.

Anyone feel a draft?

But our entrants don't go empty-handed! The personal prize packages are:
