Saxophone Stretch with Trombones on the Side, by Douglas Walker

Saxophone Stretch

Competition Second Place, 2010

Dimensions: Approx. 9 ft. H x 4 ft. W x 3 ft. D
Materials: Nonferrous metals, glass, recycled objects.

This piece started with a pair of saxophones, which is the basics of a good water features in my world. A quartet of trombones form the foundation and height is achieved by yet another trombone bearing a flute. Water spouts turn wheels whilst trickling down through the sculpture and creating a gentle yet somewhat chaotic effect. Saxophone Stretch is about graceful lines; form and function with a heavy dash of humour.

"For the love of things that go round and round and up and down squirting water."

Douglas Walker is a self taught Canadian sculptor based on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Working with a variety of recycled objects, Douglas creates sculptures often described as whimsical and Goldberg-like. Douglas is best known for turning discarded musical instruments, such as tubas and trombones, into water features. By melding and blending common cast-off objects he has proven himself to be an accomplished sculptor with his original and easily recognizable designs. Works created by Douglas can be found throughout North America, the UK and Australia.
