End of the Line, by Lawrence Wuest

End of the Line

End of the Line is a sculpture in the round in mixed media. The sculpture is constructed at ¾ life scale and consists of three railway “navvies”, wielding the tools of the railroad construction trade amongst a ruckus of timbers and rails. The sculpture poses many questions: Is this the “End of the Line” that completed the Trans-Canadian railway in 1885? Or is this the end of the railway line at the Bar Road in St. Andrews? Perhaps this is the metaphorical “End of the Line” for the railroad in Canada in the 20th Century? The optimist might say these are 21st Century navvies rebuilding the railway in response to the new realities of transportation. There is a joy and lyricism expressed in the sculpture, paying homage to the hardworking men and women who built the Canadian railroad and Canada.

Lawrence Wuest is a craftsman and sculptor in various media, living and working in New Brunswick Canada. He has been working with North American hardwoods and other media for 35 years and his functional and sculptural pieces are distributed around the world. He is motivated by a desire to capture a musical essence in physical objects created by work of the hands.  His sculptures vary from abstract lyricism to impressionistic works commenting on social and political issues. He is the creator of the sculpture symbolic of the New Brunswick Human Rights Award.
