The 2011 Kingsbrae Garden National Sculpture Competition
Kingsbrae Horticultural Garden in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, announces the second in an annual series of competitions for sculptors.
First prize in this year's competition is $10,000. The second-place winner will receive $5,000.
Kingsbrae Garden has married art and horticulture in a special exhibition garden space. This will be the home of each year's winning work.
Competition Format
- The contest is open to all artists living and working in Canada.
- Entrants will submit a drawing or a photo of a maquette for preliminary judging by Friday, October 1, 2010 at 12 o'clock noon Atlantic Time. The dimensions proposed for the final work must be included (see Work Format below).
- The final group will be selected by a jury process and will be limited to 12 entrants. The announcement will be made no later than Friday October 29, 2010. All entrants will be notified of their status in the competition.
- Those selected for the competition will submit photos of either the completed work or the work in progress by Friday February 11, 2011 at 12 o'clock noon Atlantic Time. Failure to do so will result in disqualification from the competition and the offering of that place to the next-ranked entrant.
- Finished works are to be delivered to Kingsbrae Garden by 12 o'clock noon Atlantic Time Friday May 27, 2011. Those who wish to deliver their work personally and who wish to attend the award ceremony may request a special arrangement to deliver their works no later than 12 o'clock noon Atlantic Time on Tuesday June 7, 2011.This depends on the set-up being without complications and requires prior approval.
- Final judging of the works will take place immediately following the arrival of the works and the winners will be announced at a ceremony on Friday June 10, 2011.
- The first-place winner will receive a cash prize of $10,000, payable upon the announcement. The work will become the property of Kingsbrae Garden and will become part of the permanent exhibit in the Sculpture Garden.
- The second-place winner will receive a cash prize of $5,000 payable upon the announcement. The work will become the property of Kingsbrae Garden and will be placed at the discretion of the Garden.
- All entrants will be reimbursed for transportation expenses up to $500 upon receipt of invoice.
- All works will be displayed for the season in the Sculpture Garden and will be available for sale to the public if so desired by the sculptor. The first and second place winners may offer another work for sale if they so desire.
Work Format
There are no categories for this competition. Entrants should realize that the works submitted are for placement and viewing in an outdoor, natural environment. The works should conform to the following criteria:
- The work must be three feet (one metre) minimum in height, with a recommended maximum height of eight feet (2.5 metres).
- In general, the competition is looking for submissions of private-collection size. However, works of institutional size may be acceptable to the preliminary selection panel on a case-by-case basis.
- The work must be constructed of one or more of these materials: metal, stone, fibreglass, treated or coated wood (must be weather and frost-proof). Glass is acceptable as a component only, but not as the main material. The finished sculpture must be durable in an outdoor environment.
- There is a maximum weight limit of 1000 pounds (454 kg).
